XM54 - Lithium

41.1 miles
2 hours, 3 minutes

I had to listen to Lithium for 2 days because I only drove 8 miles on the first day. It was a good mix of stuff. U2, Dave Matthews, Green Day. By the end, I just thought that the station was okay. It got repetitive.

XM53 - AC/DC Radio

51.0 miles
1 hour, 55 minutes

My day started out with Back to Black at 7:40am. But suddenly, the song changed to T-Bone Burnett's "It's Not Too Late." I actually didn't mind the sudden change as AC/DC that early in the morning is not the easiest thing in the world to get a grip on. T-Bone was followed by a Rolling Stones song ("Moonlight Mile" - love that song). I got quite excited thinking how I would be able to survive a whole day of this station. That was it though, and right in the middle of the Rolling Stones, it was back to AC/DC. At that point, I was worried that I would not make it through the entire day listening to this station, as I noted that I was already making phone calls. I was worried, one AC/DC song here and there was manageable, but all day? I decided to listen just to see if they repeated the songs.

They did not repeat songs. Well, maybe one. And I knew many more than I thought I would. I was surprised. The funny thing was that AC/DC's song titles were so funny. Black to Black, Chase the Ace, Sink the Pink, Who Made Who, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. They rhyme and are a play on words. fun. But most of them are indistinguishable other than the words. I heard Big Balls today. I had completely forgotten about that song. What a great one. So funny. I do have to say that AC/DC has a great sense of humor.

It was a typical Monday of schlepping. But I also took Quincy in for his acupuncture. He loves that. So, anyway, I survived AC/DC radio, but would not listen to it again on purpose.

XM52 - Faction

119.4 miles
2 hours, 36 minutes

I really did not like this station. In fact, I wrote "OMG, it sucks !!!" It is a lot like Liquid Metal which I hated. Not as satanic, but still horrible. Okay, I hated this station so much that for the first time, I had to change the station. I had to drive Issy down to Miami and could not bear to listen to it for more than 15 minutes. I ended up changing the station back to Coffee House.

The XM line up lists it as the station for Action Sports/Punk/Ska. I did not hear any ska and it was much harsher than punk. I thought it would start out okay when they played Green Day's "She's a Rebel." But it didn't last. I also heard Skindred's "Rat Race," The Offspring's "Gone Away," and Rev Theory's "Hell Yeah" (I can't beleive that Shazam picked up that one). I knew Eminem's "Without Me." I heard a Metallica song I had never heard of.

I drove 119.4 miles on this day and listened to the radio for 2 hours and 36 minutes. But i think I only listened to this station for about 30 minutes total. Sorry I couldn't stick to the rules.

XM51 - Coffee House

73.4 miles
3 hours, 14 minutes

A great day of schlepping. Coffee House is my favorite station. It is the best part about the merger with Sirius. Steve listens to it all of the time and I am so happy to have it on my radio now. the first song was a song by Ben Taylor (James and Carly's son) called Wicked Ways which was all about getting his girl naked and having his wicked way with her. Dirty song. But nice. Lots of Jack Johnson. In fact, it is the only station that I have heard Jack Johnson. Indigo Girls, Norah Jones all singing great covers of other songs. In fact, the little ads say "Acoustic Covers of great songs." Original songs by my favorites -- Amos Lee, Madeleine Peyroux. There were plenty of new artists that I hadn't heard of and would definitely buy, but Shazam did not recognize their songs. Bummer.

It is a Saturday. I went no where, but drove over 70 miles going back and forth. Molly had a soccer game and Carly had her Swim Banquet. I was so proud of her -- she won MVP for the Girls. Such a big deal and I missed it because I didn't know. I was dirty and gross and didn't feel like going in with everyone who was clean and dressed nicely. I was coming from Molly's soccer game and I took my time. I feel so guilty about it. Such a shitty mother. I really could have made it in time, but I didn't try. I figured and even told her that she would never get it because she is a freshman. Big mistake. Sorry Carly.

Other than that massive screw-up, it was the best radio day ever.

XM50 - The Loft

105.5 miles
3 hours

I have always loved The Loft. It is a great station. Mellow, acoustic, singer-songwriters, old stuff, new stuff. The day started off with several of my favorite performers -- Shawn Colvin, Loudon Wainwright II, The Beatles, etc. I actually heard a bunch of stuff I don't know. It was quite a great mix. Los Lobos, The Beatles (Run for Your Life from the Rubber Soul album), Josh rouse, Crazy Horse (is that Neil Young's Crazy Horse), Pink Floyd (Wish You Were Here -- loved, loved, loved it). A fabulous mix of music.

While listening, I realized that XM no longer plays the XM notes in the style of the station. I miss that. I really got a kick out of it during the country stations.

I did a lot of driving today. Steve was gone so I started off driving to the train station. I ended the day by driving up to Bak for Molly's ITS Showcase which was fantastic. We really enjoyed it. The kids are so talented. It is very nice to see how they have grown over the last 3 years.

GREAT RADIO DAY !!!!

XM49 - Classic Rewind

33.0 miles
1 hour, 46 minutes

I really liked this station a lot. It is a Sirius station. At first, I wondered what was the difference between this station and Classic Vinyl. Duh. Classic Vinyl plays music from the 60's and 70's. Vinyl albums, get it? Classic rewind is 80s and 90's. Loved it. I knew lots and lots of songs and could sing all day. Well, not all day because it wasn't a very big schlepping day. But it played a bunch of my favorite old songs from college and high school. Some songs just took me right back to Phi Tau basement with the television playing MTV. We loved MTV back then. So new. For some reason, I also got flashbacks to junior high school, 9th grade, art class. I can't remember her name, but my teacher wore ponchos and was petite with very short hair. Missssss something. We would crank up her FM radio. I so remember listening to that Bruce Springsteen song by that other band, but at this very moment, everything else about the song escapes me. It is on the tip of my tongue. Frustrating.

Anyway, I heard lots of Journey (I still love that guy's voice, Steve Perry). At least 3 songs (didn't Shazam all of them). I think that is what took me back to junior high. I was so happy at 7:38am on my way to Del Prado with Issy when they played one of my favorite bands, Heart. It was Crazy on You from the Dreamboat Annie album. Funny thing was that Shazam showed the Dreamboat Annie album cover but credited the song to the soundtrack of that Sofia Coppola movie, The Virgin Suicides (my brain is so full of such useless shit). There was Stevie Nicks (Stand Back), The Police (DeDoDoDo), Boston and to end my day, The Romantics' Talking in Your Sleep. That last song threw me right into PKT's basement. I remember thinking that the lead singer had such a lisp when he sang that song. I can picture him in his leather jacket in the video. Funny memories. I heard that song "Just Between You and Me." Never knew who sang it. I thought it was REO Speedwagon (a band that always got on my nerves). It was by April Wine. Never heard of them. One weird song was Def Leppard singing Armageddon It. What a weird song to be included on this station.

I started off the day picking up the Muhlenberg Gift person, Michelle Hummer, at the Marriott. I went to 3 different hotels before I got to the right one. We had breakfast at the Breakfast Club. If it wasn't for this little journey, my time with Classic Rewind would have been very short. I then went to the River to work in the Shark Shop (I worked with an ultra-conservative woman who was upset about all of the liberal professors at colleges spouting off their liberal ideologies and how the kids at the River were dressing like slobs while I am so jealous that they look so comfy in their sweats and jammies; i hope her son goes to Catholic University; I also got caught in the fire drill just before I wanted to leave) and then home for lunch. Back to the office (I had been there already) and then got Issy from school at 5:50pm. Steve and I drove to Broward Center (he drove, so no Classic Rewind, although i should have made him put it on) to see Chitty Bang Bang. It was eh. Long day, I fell asleep in the show and on the way home and then right to bed (after sandwiches and taking out the dogs).

XM48 - Octane

68.4 miles
3 hours, 14 minutes

I was trying to figure out what Octane is (the Station Sheet says that it is New Hard Rock). My first impression was that it is a mix between heavy metal and hard core grunge, so I guess I was right. I listened on a Wednesday, a long schlepping day and I've got to say, I got sick of listening to this station about half way through. It is just not my speed. It started off interesting. I heard a song with Carly at 7:09am on the way to school called Crazy Bitch by Buckcherry:

Hey, you're a crazy bitch.
But you fuck so good, I'm on top of it.
When I dream, I'm doing you all night
Scratches all down my back to keep me right on
You keep me right on
You're a crazy bitch, but I like the way you fuck me

I could not believe these lyrics and I am very liberal and open-minded. Seriously, who is this band. And I wondered if the entire day would be like this. (The song itself was not too bad; just the lyrics). Anyway, the day progressed with a bunch of screaming bands such as ACDC (although I can handle popular ACDC). Listening made me think: How do they do that to their voices? How can they sing more than one song at a concert? I really can't imagine. And then the band names, Three Days Grace, Apocalyptica (I actually like their song, it had strings and wasn't screaming). I had heard of Audioslave and Godsmack before listening to this station, but I would not have listened to their songs and known it was them.

Lots of schlepping. Picked up Molly and Gabby from train, then got Carly and Dani from Regency, dropped them off. Got Issy. Took Molly to voice lessons (had a couple minutes to myself with a nice cappacino), took Molly home and picked up Carly and Dani, picked up Issy at soccer practice and then went to Delray to see American Heritage's Seussical (which was actually very good; we all liked it). Such a friggin' schlep. Wish it was better music.

AM47 - Alt Nation

25.6 miles
1 hour, 25 minutes

Alt nation is just that . . . today's alternative music. I heard Weezer and The Killers each twice. Also heard a bunch of bands I had never heard of like Lostprophets, The Ting Tings (I liked their song That's Not My Name; it was fun and cute), Taking Back Sunday, and Tokyo Police Club. The first song I heard was Dashboard Confessional's Vindicated. I like that song. I have always liked alternative music, starting back in high school when I listened to WHSF. But this station was definitely limited to alternative music of today. Dashboard Confessional's song was from 3 years ago, I guess. the XM Schedule calls it New Alternative. I liked it enough to listen to it occasionally to hear what's going on.

It wasn't a big travel day. Just Hebrew school and stuff.

XM46 - Classic Vinyl

28.9 miles
1:28 hours

Excellent station. I think it comes from Sirius. The Sheet says that is is '60s and '70s Classic Rock. I loved the mix of old-time favorites. From The Who (Who Are You and Baba O'Reilly) to Billy Joel's Piano Man. Real classics. Songs that I could sing along to. Songs that Steve would love to listen to. I was happy when Baba O'Reilly came on and Carly said that she loves that song. I love that song too and I was so proud that my kids no classic rock songs. That means that Steve and I have done our job of educating our kids well. The Doors sang Touch Me (one of my favorite groups ever). There was not one song that I didn't know or didn't like. Just opened the windows on such a beautiful day and turned up the music and sang along. I bet that Shazaam would have picked up every song.

I wasn't in the car very much today. It figures. But I did a lot of afternoon schlepping. Picked up Carly after school and she asked me to take home Dani. Then Molly called and i had to pick her up. But of course, she asked if I could take Sami to her dad's office. Then I had to get Issy and then take her to soccer practice. I was just frustrated in the afternoon because I really had to work, but i ended up schlepping the world around. And Issy was on shut-down mode; not listening. So frustrating. I went to Publix and Office Depot to cool down. Trying to help Carly get organized to get her homework done and grades up. It makes me sick just to think about it.

LOVED CLASSIC VINYL !!!!

XM43 - Sirius XMU

92 miles
3:00 hours

I realized today that Sirius and XM have officially merged. Sirius is obviously a Sirius station - I figured that out by the name. I printed out the new station line-up and realized that there are several stations that I will have to go back and listen to. Not a big deal

Sirius XMU is like a college radio station playing a lot of indie rock. I like it. I have heard of many of the bands from some of the soundtrack albums I have. I was so happy when I heard The Shins. Every time I hear the Shins, I like them. But I never buy anything from them but I do have 2 of their songs from the Garden State soundtrack.
----------------
Now playing: The Shins - Caring Is Creepy
via FoxyTunes

There were some groups or singers I have heard of from Starbucks, i.e., Luna ("23 Minutes in Brussels"). others I have seen on Saturday Night Live, i.e., Kings of Leon ("Red Morning Light"). I also heard, Pavement, and Santogold. At least these were the ones I got on Shazam. I enjoyed it. It reminded me of the days of listening to the indie station out of Annapolis - HFS. I don't even know if it is still around or if it was sold. [Of course, I just looked it up and it is still around. Baltimore's best alternative station.] It was fun to hear what is coming out now. They also played a couple of old familiar songs that I knew from long ago.

I was in my car so much today because I drove Molly to the airport. Then I picked up Issy from school and took her to the Boca Museum of Art school. She really likes it there. I still drove about 30 miles just in Boca. Who the hell knows where I went. It just seems like a lot to me.

I would listen to this station again. Just to hear what is new and going on. The Station Sheet calls it a Indie/College/Unsigned station. Maybe I will learn about some bands or musicians that i really didn't know about before. I love doing that. Once again, my Journey has been educational.

XM42 - Liquid Metal

11/13/08
36.6 miles
1 hour, 44 minutes

The absolute worst station I have listened to since I started this thing.
Oh my god. It was so horrible. It wasn't even music. I cannot believe
that people listen to this shit. I went to the train station early to get
Molly and Gabi, so I went to go hang out in Starbucks. I wasn't in my car
more than 2 minutes when I desperately called Sheryl and got her answering
machine. So then I called Wendy. I was panicked when I got her answering
machine too. Once at Starbucks, Wendy called me back all serious and upset.
She wanted to know what was wrong. She said I sounded like something was
wrong. It was the "music" or shit coming out of my radio. It was totally
freaking me out. I told Wendy that I was scared to go back in my car. It
really scared me and made me want to dress in all black and put lots of
heavy dark eyeliner on around my white painted face. I could not get over
how the music actually made me feel. What an affect it has on people. I can
honestly say that if there is a devil, it is the devil's music.

Alright, so what is Liquid Metal, the sound that made me cringe and cower in
my seat with a horrible, distressed expression on my face? It is heavy,
heavy metal. It is that banging guitar and yelling. Not screaming, but
yelling in that deep Satanic voice. I do not have a clue what these bands
were saying. I was in the car a full hour and 45 minutes and only knew 3 of
the bands -- Iron Maiden, Megadeth and Judas Priest. Interesting, those 2
bands did not play the hellish sounds that the other bands played. There
was evena slight melody in Judas Priest's song. All of the other songs
sounded exactly the same -- Trivium's KrisuteGomen, Straight Line Stitch's
Black Veil, and As I Lay Dying's Within Destruction.

Gabi was able to understand one of the song's lyrics. About death and
stuff. Molly rolled down the windows and played the music really loud.
This shit has to be played loud. We certainly laughed a lot about it.
Then, while we were at Yamato and Powerline, all of the sudden, the station
played Tenacious D, Jack Black and his partner Kyle. It was so funny. A
little yelling and then some of his funny soft stuff. The lyrics were
hysterical (although now I can't remember them).

Later on, I had Carly, Molly and Issy in the car. Funny thing was that we
were coming home from Molly's voice lesson. Such a contrast. Anyway, I
thought that Carly was going to crawl into herself, she hated the sound so
much. For the first time, I was really close to changing the station. Then
we heard a band called Meshuggah. Same Shit. But a great name. I told the
girls how it meant crazy in yiddush. I looked it up on Wikipedia. It was a
Danish or Swedish band in the late 80's. Great name; awful sound.

I will never, ever listen to Liquid Metal again. I felt like Tipper Gore
and so straight-laced with that music on. I am guessing that this is how
parents felt in the 50's with Elvis. I just don't get it at all.

XM42 - Hair Nation

61.2 miles
3 hours, 13 minutes

Well, Hair Nation was all of the 80s hair bands, like Motley Crew, Winger (lots and lots of Winger) and Poison. Several bands I had never heard of like Black N Blue. They also played a Judas Priest song (Some Heads Are Gonna Roll). There must have been about 4 or 5 Winger songs. I had heard of Winger before, but had never heard one of their songs before. I recognized a few of the other songs, but very few. Funny thing was that there seemed to be a lot of power ballads being played. For some reason, that humored me. I could just picture these guys with long, stringy hair under hats or bandannas and wearing leather and tights spandex pants belting out these love songs about their tattooed chicks. I was surprised that there was no Guns & Roses. I did hear one L.A. Guns song. I just read in Entertainment Magazine that L.A. Guns was the name of the band that Axl Rose merged with to form Guns & Roses. I can't believe I remember such shit. Anyway, it wasn't the end of the world. I did get to tell the Girls all about these types of bands. I don't think that they liked the music very much.

It was a typical Wednesday of schlepping. Picking up people from school and trains and taking them to soccer or here or there. Three hours in the car just schlepping. It is unbelievable to me how much time i spend in my car.

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

XM40 - Deep Tracks

71.5 miles
3 hours, 4 minutes

I have always liked Deep Tracks a lot. In fact, it is one of my buttons. But I learned from really listening to the station that it is advertised not just as a classic rock station, but one where you hear old rock songs that you don't usually hear on the radio. Like Humble Pie's Stone Cold Fever. there was actually a bunch of songs that I didn't know. It wasn't like classic, classic rock. It was like alternative classic rock. Guess that's why they call it "Deep Classic Rock." I have it on my favorites because I love classic rock. But now I realize that it is not true classics. Still there were many that I could sing to. Hopefully, there will be another station that has truer classic rock songs that I can sing out loud.

I did a lot of driving today. Actually schlepping because it was a Tuesday. I picked up from Del Prado and took the little kids to Hebrew school. Carly came with me and then i took her to TBE for BOFTY dinner and Derech Torah. Then I went right to the train and picked up Molly and Gabby. They wanted to go to the Open House at West Boca so I schlepped all the way out there. It is far from the train station at Yamato and 95. They were completely misbehaving. I could not believe how horrible they are acting. I was embarrassed and angry, so we left. I drove Molly all the way to TBE for Derech Torah and then back home to drop off Gabby. Ate quickly and then back to TBE to pick up Carly and Molly and then home. That's a shitload of driving. Glad the station wasn't bad.

I don't' know if I will keep Deep Tracks in my buttons.

XM39 - Led Zeppelin

37.1 miles
2 hours, 14 minutes

At the beginning, I quickly loved this station. I love Led Zeppelin. But by the afternoon, I didn't like it as much . It was so repetitive. I think the music was on a loop. It literally played the same songs in the same order over again. And not once did I hear Stairway to Heaven. I heard Bring It on Home twice. And a couple of others. What a shame. I guess I could listen to it every once in a while. You know, just for fun.

I did a lot of useless schlepping today as evidenced by the small number of miles I drove and the amount of time I spent in my car. Just normal schlepping although i picked molly up at the train and took her to Dr. Kinmon. It seemed like more though. Then soccer practice back and forth and waiting.

Saturday, November 8, 2008

XM33 - Spirit

96.9 miles
2 hours, 47 minutes

Spirit was a country gospel station. Lots of Jesus and God stuff. Like those same-sex gospel groups. Not church choir music. More like country gospel music. I pictured women in skirts and country cowgirl shirts with big blonde teased hair singing harmonies. And men in jeans with high waists and mustaches and teased hair parted on the side. Wear you can picture the one guy doing baritone. Bum Bum Bum doo humm. Needless to say. I did not like it at all. I just wanted it over with. Obviously, nothing showed up on Shazaam.

It was a Saturday. Most of the time spent in the car was traveling up to West Palm to take Molly and Issy to see Fame at Dreyfoos SOA. We had to listen to it and none of us were very happy. We just made up words. Or complained.

Wednesday, November 5, 2008

XM29 - U-Pop

Ok. I just get into the car to take Issy to the bus stop and turn the channel to U-Pop. I thought, it is going to be a long day. But it really wasn't that bad at the beginning. Then it got repetitive and I got tired of it quickly. I thought it was going to be all electric club dance music that they play in Europe. I kind of remembered that that was what this station use to play (which was why I never listened to it). But I was wrong. It was just today's popular music. A mix of hip/hop and other crap like that. But then they played the same songs over and over again. Don't think I need to listen to this one again.

XM25 - The Blend

11/2/08

I didn't drive a lot with The Blend. I listen to that station ordinarily, so it was not earth-shattering. A lot of old songs that I love. John Cougar Mellencamp with my favorite song of his - Jack & Diane. Thelma Houston - Don't Leave Me That Way. I haven't heard that in years. Hall & Oates with that song they parodied on SNL last week. And Seal with that song I love - Kiss from a Rose. That is a beautiful song. Love it. This station is a nice blend of pop music hits. Almost easy listening.

Today is a Saturday. Not much driving since Steve drove his car to soccer.

Sent from my cell phone while out of my office.
